Hainan's Sanya becomes China's most popular holiday destination over New Year weekend

China's largest online tour company Ctrip confirmed that the number of bookings in Sanya increased by 36% year-on-year over the New Year weekend

The Chinese resort city of Sanya on the southern coast of Hainan province was the most popular holiday destination in China on the New Year weekend (January 1-3 in China), according to the results of processing large amounts of data obtained by the popular Chinese tourist platform Mafengwo.

According to the platform, Sanya beat Beijing, Shanghai and a number of other popular tourist destinations. In the past few days, leisure vacations were in particularly high demand among young people. A particularly heavy inflow of tourists to Hainan's resort was seen on Wuzhizhou Island, a vacation spot leisure vacations and favored by Chinese and foreign divers, located near the coastal area.

In addition, vacationers arriving in Sanya showed great interest in scenic areas and tropical forest parks. Many of Hainan's guests chose to stay in prestigious five-star hotels. As confirmed by China's largest online tour company Ctrip, the number of bookings in Sanya over the New Year weekend was up 36% year on year, and 85% higher than in 2020.

Sanya is China's leading resort, with more than 1 million people, according to the 2021 census. The average annual temperature in this city is 25.4 degrees Celsius, and the coastline is more than 200 kilometers long. There are 19 bays in the adjacent water area and about 40 islands suitable for recreation. All this allows the local administration to successfully develop yacht tourism and beach recreation.
