Israel beings 'precise operation' against radicals in central Gaza

"During the operation, the Israeli Navy conducted a number of targeted strikes along the coastline in the central Gaza Strip in order to assist ground troops operating in the area," the statement noted

TEL AVIV, April 11. /TASS/. The 162nd Division of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has begun "a precise operation" against radicals in central Gaza, the army said in a statement.

"Overnight, the 162nd Division began a precise, intelligence-based operation to eliminate terrorist operatives and strike terrorist infrastructure in central Gaza. Prior to the entrance of the troops to the area, Israeli Air Force fighter jets and additional aircraft struck terrorist infrastructure above and below the ground in the central Gaza Strip," the statement reads.

"During the operation, the Israeli Navy conducted a number of targeted strikes along the coastline in the central Gaza Strip in order to assist ground troops operating in the area," the statement added.

In the early hours of April 7, the Israeli army withdrew the 98th Division, which had been conducting operations in Khan Yunis for four months, from southern Gaza. The Kan radio station said that the 162nd Division and the Nahal Brigade remained in the enclave, with the latter being in control of the security corridor dividing Gaza into two parts.

Tensions in the Middle East flared up again on October 7, 2023, after militants from the radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, killing residents of border communities and taking people hostage. In response, Israel announced a total blockade of Gaza and launched a ground operation in the enclave, also carrying out strikes on targets in the Strip and certain areas of Lebanon and Syria. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
