French MEP says Ukraine cannot win in conflict with Russia

Thierry Mariani suggested that "in the coming months, the front line will be pushed back," as Ukraine falters

PARIS, April 8. /TASS/. Ukrainian troops will be retreating in the coming months, French MEP Thierry Mariani said on the air of the LCI TV channel.

"I believe that Ukraine will not be able to win," Mariani said. "It is necessary to start negotiations on a peaceful settlement as soon as possible."

He also suggested that "in the coming months, the front line will be pushed back," as Ukraine falters.

Mariani urged not adding fuel to the fire in the conflict. He also opposed the idea of sending French troops to Ukraine, stressing that France is not under threat.

On February 16, the Presidents of France and Ukraine, Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Zelensky, signed a security pact. As part of this agreement, Paris plans to supply Kiev with additional military assistance worth 3 billion euros, which will cover "all aspects of cooperation." This includes cooperation in the defense industry, military training, intelligence and civilian assistance. The document entered into force immediately after its signing, and will be valid for 10 years.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on February 26 that at a meeting in Paris with representatives of about 20 Western countries, the topic of the possible dispatch of ground troops to Ukraine was raised. According to him, the participants did not reach a consensus on this issue, but such a scenario cannot be ruled out in the future.
