Russia, Iran to continue rapprochement after presidential election, expert believes

According to Mahdi Khanalizade, Tehran and Moscow "have a strategic view on the further development of relations, including with regard to the imminent end to the US’ power"

MOSCOW, March 19. /TASS/. Moscow-Tehran relations will continue to get stronger in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s victory in the election, Iranian political analyst and international relations expert Mahdi Khanalizade told TASS.

"I consider [Russian President] Vladimir Putin to be one of the few people in Russia who acknowledge the strategic importance of relations between Moscow and Tehran. So, his re-election will definitely be conducive to the process of rapprochement, as well as enhancing cooperation between Russia and Iran," the expert noted.

According to him, "the time of unipolarity is gone," and every country in the world has its own agenda. Even the US’ official allies say that they will not fully bend to Washington’s will." So, the fact that Tehran and Moscow "have a strategic view on the further development of relations, including with regard to the imminent end to the US’ power, will certainly benefit both countries and provide a base for expanding cooperation in politics and security."

He added that the EU’s hostile policy towards Russia due to the conflict in Ukraine "may create conditions for enhancing Iran-Russia cooperation," which will let the countries "expand collaboration in various fields, including economy, trade and agriculture." According to the scientist, the views of the two countries’ leaders "are fully aligned," and they should strive for the same thing "in economic cooperation."

Earlier on Tuesday, Putin talked to Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi over the phone. According to the Kremlin, Raisi "warmly congratulated Vladimir Putin on his re-election. The Iranian president expressed "confidence that Russian-Iranian friendly relations will continue to develop dynamically for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries." The parties also discussed cooperation in BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Iran became a full-fledged BRICS member on January 1, 2024.
