New makeup of lower house of Belarusian parliament blend of party members, independents

The chairman of the country’s Central Election Commission also informed that 20 out of the 110 elected deputies are members of the lower house of the current convocation

The new composition of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic (the lower house of the parliament of Belarus) includes 70 representatives of political parties and 40 non-partisan members, Igor Karpenko, the chairman of the country’s Central Election Commission, said at a press conference.

"Members of political parties: 70 people, non-aligned members: 40. The political parties represented are: the Belaya Rus party - 51 people (46.4% of the total number of deputies), the Communist Party of Belarus - seven people (6.4%), the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus - four people (3.6%), the Republican Party of Labor and Justice - eight people (7.3%)," he said.

Karpenko also informed that 20 out of the 110 elected deputies are members of the lower house of the current convocation. There are 37 women in the new composition of the Chamber, as well as an individual under 31.

On February 25, during the first one-day election in the history of Belarus, 110 deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly and 12,514 members of local councils were elected to five-year terms. There were 263 candidates vying for seats in the parliament, while 18,802 candidates competed for mandates in local councils. The voter turnout was 73.09%.
