UN Secretary General takes balanced position on Gaza — diplomat

The Secretary-General invoked Paragraph 99 of the UN Charter by calling the Security Council to meet, because international peace and security are at risk, just as the whole system of international law, Palestinian Ambassador to Austria and permanent observer to the United Nations in Vienna Salah Abdel-Shafi said

VIENNA, December 24 /TASS/. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres took a balanced position on the situation in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Ambassador to Austria and permanent observer to the United Nations in Vienna Salah Abdel-Shafi told TASS.

"I think that the position of the Secretary-General is in general a very balanced position," the Ambassador said. "The Secretary-General invoked Paragraph 99 [of the UN Charter] by calling the Security Council to meet, because international peace and security are at risk, just as the whole system of international law. So it was an unprecedented move by the Secretary General," Abdel-Shafi noted.

Tensions flared up in the Middle East after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip attacked Israeli territory on October 7, when many Israelis living in the settlements near the border were killed and more than 200 people, including children, women and the elderly, were taken hostage. Hamas views its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ steps against the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria.
