Some 130 hostages still held by Hamas, three Russians among them — Israeli ambassador

Earlier, Hamas said it had released two female hostages with Russian citizenship and handed them over to the Red Cross "in response to the efforts of Russian President" Vladimir Putin

MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. Three Russian citizens are still being held by the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, while overall some 130 hostages remain in captivity, Israeli Ambassador to Russia Alexander Ben Zvi told the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

"There are 130 hostages in the hands of Hamas. Of them, I think that 11 are nationals of other countries who do not have Israeli citizenship. <...> Some of them have Russian citizenship, I think there are three [Russians among them]," the ambassador said.

Earlier, Hamas said it had released two female hostages with Russian citizenship and handed them over to the Red Cross "in response to the efforts of Russian President" Vladimir Putin. Hours before that, Hamas official Musa Abu Marzouq said the movement planned to release several more Russians as a show of respect to Putin.

Tensions flared up again in the Middle East on October 7 after militants from the Gaza Strip-based radical Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise incursion on Israeli territory, killing many Israeli kibbutz residents living near the Gaza border and abducting more than 200 Israelis, including women, children and the elderly. Hamas described its attack as a response to Israeli authorities’ aggressive actions against the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City. Israel declared a total blockade of the Gaza Strip and launched bombardments of the enclave and some areas in Lebanon and Syria, as well as a ground operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Clashes are also taking place in the West Bank.
