US presidential candidate DeSantis opposes NATO membership for Ukraine

The governor of Florida also said the US should give a "blank cheque" to Ukraine unless that brings the conflict to an end

NEW YORK, September 24. /TASS/. US presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis, a Republican, said Ukraine’s joining NATO wouldn’t be in the interest of the US.

"I don’t think NATO membership is in our interest, to me," he was quoted as saying by Bloomberg. "All that would do was add more obligations to us, so if you’re adding more obligations, then what are benefits that we’re getting in return?"

DeSantis, currently the governor of Florida, also said the US should give a "blank cheque" to Ukraine unless that brings the conflict to an end.

US news media describe the politician as the main rival to former US President Donald Trump to be the Republican candidate for president in the 2024 election. He said in July that too much involvement in the Ukrainian crisis isn’t a vital US national interest.
