Pope Francis concerned by stalling Donbass settlement

The Pope noted that peace processes are vital in hot spots, refugee rights should be taken care of, while coronavirus vaccines should be equally distributed globally to prevent a new gap between rich and poor countries

ROME, February 8. /TASS/. Pope Francis is concerned by stalling efforts to settle the conflict in eastern Ukraine, Russian Ambassador to the Vatican Alexander Avdeyev told TASS Monday after a personal conversation with the Pope as part of the annual meeting of heads of diplomatic missions to the Holy See.

"Pope Francis is very much concerned that the Donbass crisis resolution is protracted. The Vatican believes that the settlement should be based on the Minsk Agreements," the senior diplomat stressed.

In his speech addressing the diplomatic corps, the Pope touched upon a wide range of issues of the international agenda, noting that peace processes are vital in hot spots, refugee rights should be taken care of, while coronavirus vaccines should be equally distributed around the world to prevent a new gap between rich and poor countries.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly pointed out that the Minsk Agreements should be strictly and consistently adhered to amid Kiev’s stated lack of desire to fulfill the assumed obligations for settlement in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier, Pope Francis called for peace in the east of Ukraine on a number of occasions.
