Diplomat says no one tried to silence Russia’s voice at UN climate conference

"I understand that unlike on other platforms, here, the key players realize the importance of Russia’s role in the fight against global warming, as well as Russia’s role as one of the largest suppliers of hydrocarbons to the global market," Sergey Kononuchenko said

MOSCOW, December 18. /TASS/. No attempts to deprive Russia of the right to vote were made at the 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), Sergey Kononuchenko, the Russian foreign minister’s climate envoy, said.

"I wouldn’t say that any particular attempt to deprive us of the right to vote or somehow reduce Russia’s role in the climate-related process was made at the event," he noted in response to a question at a TASS press conference.

"I understand that unlike on other platforms, here, the key players realize the importance of Russia’s role in the fight against global warming, as well as Russia’s role as one of the largest suppliers of hydrocarbons to the global market. That said, they understand that excluding Russia from this process would, in fact, undermine common efforts aimed at achieving the main goals of the Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement," Kononuchenko added.

The 28th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) took place in Dubai between November 30 and December 12. The parties decided to hold the next conference in Azerbaijan. Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Ruslan Edelgeriyev, who led the country’s delegation to the Dubai conference, said that Moscow was ready to assist Baku in organizing the event.
