West politicizes artificial intelligence, Russian diplomat says

According to Maria Zakharova, the Russian side notes the West's desire to "monopolize both technology and standards" regulating information technologies and artificial intelligence, as well as the desire to "play exclusively by the rules they have invented and sharpened for themselves"

MOSCOW, November 30. /TASS/. Western countries are polarizing the rapidly developing sphere of artificial intelligence (AI), unleashing a kind of AI war, instead of coming together to figure out a way to regulate it, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"Progress in the field of artificial intelligence far exceeds the global community’s efforts to regulate it and develop [its] philosophy, and this philosophy is needed, just as it is necessary to develop a universal set of rules," she pointed out in a video message to the participants of the 5th Digital Diplomacy Forum. "However, we can see that here, unfortunately, the West’s politics are shining through once again. Instead of coming together in a fair and objective manner on the basis of the relevant international legal framework and best practices, everyone is getting caught in a battle was initiated by Western countries," she said.

According to the diplomat, the Russian side notes the West's desire to "monopolize both technology and standards" regulating information technologies and artificial intelligence, as well as the desire to "play exclusively by the rules they have invented and sharpened for themselves."

Orchestrated lawlessness

The diplomat also pointed to the West's destructive policy in the field of traditional media. "Internet giants and American corporations, literally at Washington's behest, immediately joined the global anti-Russian campaign, not only condoning but encouraging calls for violence and the murder of Russians," Zakharova noted. "All the big talk about the ideals of freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the absence of dividing lines in the media sphere, which the West used to boast about, were trampled upon and discarded as useless as soon as they ceased to meet the goals of the Western agenda," she said.

According to the diplomat, the majority of the world is wide awake to what the West is doing here.

The Digital Diplomacy Forum is timed to coincide with the International RUSSIA EXPO at Moscow’s Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy, which is being held from November 4, 2023 to April 12, 2024. It will showcase the country's key achievements in various sectors of the economy, with all 89 of Russia’s regions presenting their expositions. TASS is a partner news agency of the forum.
