Increase in number of troops not to entail another call-up – Russian Defense Ministry

The increase is being implemented in stages at the expense of contract workers, the department reported

MOSCOW, December 1. /TASS/. The presidential executive order to increase the number of troops in the Russian Armed Forces implies no military call-up, as the increase will be reached gradually by recruiting more contract soldiers, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"The increase in the number of troops in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is being implemented gradually by recruiting citizens willing to enlist for military service under contract. In this regard, there are no plans to significantly increase conscription into mandatory military service. The military call-up is not envisaged," the Defense Ministry said.

The Defense Ministry explained that the increase in the number of troops was caused by the growing threats to the country, associated with the special military operation and the ongoing NATO enlargement.

"The alliance is building up its joint armed forces near Russia’s borders, deploying additional air defense and strike weapon systems. The capabilities of NATO tactical nuclear forces are being bolstered. By the end of 2025, the United States is planning to replace 200 obsolete free-fall nuclear bombs, stationed in Europe and Turkey, with their new high-precision edition. Under the current circumstances, the additional buildup of combat personnel and the number of troops is an appropriate response to the NATO bloc’s aggressive activities," the Defense Ministry concluded.
