MURMANSK, October 24. /TASS/. The Northern Fleet’s frigate Admiral Gorshkov armed with hypersonic weapons practiced defending the main naval base of Severomorsk in air defense drills, the Fleet’s press office reported on Tuesday.
"The crew of the frigate Admiral Gorshkov held an exercise for air defense of the Northern Fleet’s main naval base of Severomorsk. The exercise followed the scenario of repelling a simulated enemy’s air attack on the Fleet’s ships and coastal facilities. The naval sailors tackled the objectives of detecting aerial targets with the help of computer-generated simulation of the situation on the control instruments of radio-technical and surface-to-air missile armament," the press office said in a statement.
The naval sailors practiced detecting the simulated enemy and readied the frigate’s onboard air defense systems. The combat teams of the Poliment-Redut air defense system tracked simulated aerial targets, the press office said.
The Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov is the Project 22350 lead multi-purpose frigate designed to operate in distant waters, effectively fight enemy naval, aerial and submerged forces and deliver strikes on ground, coastal and surface targets at a distance of over 1,000 km.
The warship was built at the Severnaya Verf Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) and joined the Russian Navy in July 2018. In December 2022, the frigate conducted an inter-fleet transit and arrived at the Northern Fleet’s main naval base of Severomorsk after its routine maintenance at the Kronshtadt Marine Plant.
The frigate Admiral Gorshkov carries the Kalibr-NK missile system as its basic strike weapon. The warship was actively involved in the testing of Russia’s breakthrough Tsirkon hypersonic missile.
