Israel, Lebanon reach preliminary agreement to end hostilities — news portal

The deal envisages the establishment of a US-led oversight committee to monitor its implementation and address violations

WASHINGTON, November 25. /TASS/. Israel and Lebanon have tentatively agreed on the terms of a ceasefire deal, the Axios news portal reported, citing its sources.

According to the sources, Israel’s war cabinet will consider the deal on November 26. "The Israeli cabinet needs to approve the deal on Tuesday and something can always go wrong until then," the portal cited an unnamed US official.

The deal envisages the establishment of a US-led oversight committee to monitor its implementation and address violations. The United States has also agreed to guarantee its support for Israel’s military actions against imminent threats from Lebanon’s territory, such as Hezbollah’s potential re-establishment near the border or smuggling of weapons.

Under the deal, Israel can take military action only after consulting with the United States and if the Lebanese military fails to remove the threat.

Lebanon and Israel are holding US-brokered talks on a draft ceasefire agreement providing for a 60-day transition period, during which Israel is to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon while Lebanese forces are to be deployed to border areas and Hezbollah is to move its heavy weapons and units north of the Litani River, to a distance of 30 kilometers from the border.
