NICOSIA, April 2. /TASS/. Hungary sees proposals to send Western troops to Ukraine as unacceptable and remains opposed to arms supplies to the country, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said following a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Constantinos Kombos in Nicosia.
"Hungary, like Cyprus, does not supply arms to Ukraine. And we will not supply them. We also strongly oppose statements that talk about the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine," the Hungarian minister said at a news conference.
He said the Hungarian government believes in peace, although "this is not the mainstream" in Europe now.
"Unfortunately, if you take a pro-peace position, you immediately start to be stigmatized, and there is very little room for rational dialogue on these issues in the European Union," the minister lamented.
According to Szijjarto, "the same applies to sanctions" against Russia.
"It is quite clear that the sanctions are also damaging European countries themselves," Sijjarto said.
Some countries are more negatively affected by the restrictions than others, he said, but there is no chance that the EU will develop a mechanism of compensation. The minister said the damage was brought on by the EU's "own sanctions policy.".
