CAIRO, December 8. /TASS/. At least 388 wounded civilians have been evacuated from the embattled Gaza Strip through the Rafah checkpoint on the enclave’s southern border with Egypt since tensions escalated in early October, Dr. Munir al-Bursh, director general of the Gaza Health Ministry, said.
"There are more than 46,000 wounded in Gaza, and only 388 of them have left the enclave through the Rafah checkpoint," he told Al Jazeera television. "It is necessary to open the Rafah checkpoint and bring in field hospitals in light of the large number of wounded," the public health official noted. According to him, Palestinians "are not allowed to be treated abroad; it's a shame."
The enclave’s chief public health physician revealed that displaced people in specialized shelters are "suffering from infectious diseases and epidemics," in addition to infections transmitted through drinking water. "Hospitals in the south of the Gaza Strip cannot cope with the number of wounded transferred from the north [of the enclave]," al-Bursh added.
On the morning of December 1, the Israeli army accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire and announced that it would resume fighting in Gaza. Palestinian officials blamed the US for the renewed Israeli aggression. On December 7, the Palestinian Health Ministry reported that the number of casualties in the enclave since tensions escalated had exceeded 17,000.
