UNITED NATIONS, October 4. /TASS/. Russia is fully committed to the Joint Statement of the Leaders of the Five Nuclear-Weapon States on Preventing Nuclear War, Vladimir Yermakov, a director at the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for arms nonproliferation and control said in a statement that was read out at a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly First Committee on Tuesday.
"This session of the First Committee is taking place amid a grave international security crisis. These circumstances are provoked by a group of countries that seek exclusivity, which was unable to cope with the phantom pains of the colonial past and continues to aggressively push their narrow self-serving aspirations, contrary to the principle of indivisibility of security and the fundamental interests of other states and peoples," according to the statement that was read out by Konstantin Vorontsov, a deputy director of the department. "Such a destructive policy has exacerbated risks in the area of strategic stability, spurred the development of crises in many areas that have disastrous consequences for the entire world community, primarily developing countries."
"We regard continued commitment by all five nuclear-weapon states to the idea of preventing a nuclear war between countries possessing nuclear weapons, which was enshrined in the January joint statement by the leaders of nuclear-weapon states, as one of the most important objectives in this context," Yermakov said in the statement. "Russia is fully committed to it."
"The irresponsibility of the destructive course of US-led NATO countries toward an open confrontation with Russia in Ukraine and balancing on the brink of a direct armed conflict is obvious, which is fraught with further escalation up to a military clash of nuclear powers with the ensuing dire consequences. Such a turn of events must be prevented," the diplomat said.
