Iran still not seeking to obtain nuclear weapons — president

Masoud Pezeshkian told Fox News that it is forbidden from the religious standpoint to have a weapon of mass destruction

NEW YORK, September 25. /TASS/. Iran still has no intention of obtaining a nuclear weapon, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Fox News in an interview.

When asked whether his country had any desire to acquire a nuclear warhead, he said: "Absolutely no."

"Our martyred revered Supreme Leader [Ali Khamenei] said several times in the past that this is religiously forbidden. From the religious standpoint, it is prohibited to have a weapon of mass destruction," he added.

He reaffirmed his country’s readiness to observe the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

"We have never sought to obtain a nuclear weapon. We want to comply with the Non-Proliferation Treaty," the Iranian president said.

In his words, Iran is ready for agreements with the United States, and is putting forward demands only within the framework of the international law.
