Russian Health Minister welcomes strict penalties for coronavirus fake news

On March 31, Russian State Duma passed the amendment to the Administrative Offence Code that introduced fines of up to 10 million rubles for companies for dissemination of fake news on public threats

MOSCOW, April 6. /TASS/. The amendments to the Criminal and Administrative Offense Codes that tighten the penalty for dissemination of fake coronavirus information is a right decision, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said on TV Monday.

"At this time - yes," he said, answering a question whether he considers such measures appropriate.

On March 31, Russian State Duma passed the amendment to the Administrative Offence Code that introduced fines of up to 10 million rubles for companies for dissemination of fake news on public threats, including the epidemics.

By April 6, a total of 6,343 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 406 patients having recovered from the virus. The country’s latest data indicates 47 fatalities nationwide.
