Putin, Merkel discuss Navalny situation

The Navalny issue was raised in connection with the interest shown by the German chancellor

MOSCOW, April 8. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have discussed the situation around blogger Alexey Navalny, the Kremlin press service reported on Thursday.

"In connection with the interest shown by the federal chancellor, the Navalny issue was raised," the report said.

The two leaders also discussed the activities of foreign media outlets and non-governmental organizations in Russia and Germany.

Earlier on Thursday, Chairman of the Russian Presidential Council for the Development of Civil Society and Human Rights Valery Fadeyev said that the Council could verify reports on tuberculosis incidence in the Pokrov penal colony, where Navalny is imprisoned. According to Fadeyev, allegations that Navalny’s health problems are ignored are false. The regional Federal Penitentiary Service Directorate disclosed that Navalny had recently undergone a scheduled medical examination, and his health was found to be satisfactory.
