MOSCOW, November 24. /TASS/. Cyberattacks on Russia organized by politically-motivated hacktivists no longer made up the bulk of all DDoS attacks in October, according to StormWall (Russia’s developer of information cyber solutions). Last October their share was 68%, but now traditional attacks prevail, and they may intensify in the next few months of this year.
The share of "political" cyberattacks stood at 26% of all cyber incidents in Russia this October, down more than 2.5-fold from last year, according to StormWall’s research obtained by TASS. Ordinary DDoS attacks accounted for 74%, up from only 32% a year ago.
StormWall experts say the number of cyberattacks by politically-driven hacktivists went down because after an unprecedented amount of activity at the end of last year, hackers simply lost their drive, and they also lack the technical resources. This pushed the number of their attacks down as of this October.
StormWall head and co-founder Pamil Khantimov confirmed that in October 2023 only weak, sporadic attacks by hacktivists unable to seriously damage Russian entities were registered.
"DDoS attacks aimed at getting money were the main problem, and this trend is on the rise. We suggest that in November and December of this year hackers will be attacking companies to reap even more benefits. Black Friday and the New Year lie ahead, with the number of attacks always going up during this time," Khantimov said.
According to StormWall, among traditional attacks this October 47% of them were aimed at extortion and blackmail, 35% were carried out for some unethical goals, while 18% of them targeted concealing other malicious activities.
