ST PETERSBURG, June 21 (Itar-Tass) - Russia’s gas giant Gazprom has signed a memorandum with Italy’s Enel to buy its Marcinelle power plant in Belgium.

The document was signed on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday.

The power plant’s capacity is around 400 MW.

According to the information available to Itar-Tass, a 200 million euro deal will allow Gazprom to ensure additional gas demand and additional margin.

The deal will be sealed in compliance with Enel’s programme for spending reduction in Europe.

Recently gas-powered plants became less attractive in Europe over cheap coal supplies from the U.S. to the European market.

The Marcinelle power plant was launched in 2012.

Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller demonstrated his interest in this asset a year ago.
