GENEVA, January 15. /TASS/. The formation of a group of mediators from "middle powers," or medium-sized nations, tentatively named the M-10, could step in to help resolve differences between major powers, including the conflict in Ukraine and issues of strategic stability, World Economic Forum (WEF) experts said in a program document titled "Shaping Cooperation in a Fragmenting World," released during the annual WEF meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
"Within this, there should be a 'middle powers mediation group' on issues like Russia/Ukraine. Unlike the various unilateral peace initiatives attempted to date, a middle-powers grouping with cross-regional representation would have the diplomatic weight, the range of perspectives and the combined geopolitical clout to change the terms of debate around viable pathways to war termination and a stable peace," the document reads.
Moreover, according to the WEF analysts, such a middle powers group could ensure the resumption of arms control negotiations by using bilateral ties with major powers to shift the focus toward issues of strategic stability.
The WEF analysts did not disclose the full potential composition of this group, but note that India and Norway could be among the mediators.
The need to establish such a group, which is tentatively to be called the M-10, is evident due to the increasing prevalence of disagreements among major powers and poor communications between existing negotiating formats, such as the G7, G20 and BRICS, the experts clarified. The participants of the informal association should include countries with extensive diplomatic and economic influence that are not considered major players in geopolitical competition.
The WEF is a Swiss non-governmental organization. It hosts annual meetings with the participation of leading business executives, political leaders and experts in various fields. About 1,000 major global corporations and organizations are members of the WEF.
