SKA head coach expects Ovechkin to beat Gretzky’s record in 2025

"In theory and in practice, Gretzky’s record is doable for Ovechkin," Roman Rotenberg said

MOSCOW, January 2. /TASS/. The Head Coach of SKA St. Petersburg Roman Rotenberg hopes that Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin will surpass the record of goals scored during regular season matches of the National Hockey League (NHL) set by Wayne Gretzky in 2025. Rotenberg shared his expectations with Sport Express.

Ovechkin has scored 870 times in the NHL’s regular season. He is topped only by Gretzky, who has 894 goals to his credit.

"If a player gives up, everything becomes impossible. But if not, everything is achievable. In theory and in practice, Gretzky’s record is doable for Ovechkin. We believe that Alexander will beat it in 2025," the SKA head coach said.

Washington Capitals will be playing Minnesota Wild at 3:00 a.m. Moscow time (12:00 a.m. GMT) on January 3.
