Over 1,000 people injured in Taiwan earthquake

143 are waiting for assistance

HONG KONG, April 3. /TASS/. More than 1,000 people have been injured in the earthquake in Taiwan, the country’s crisis center grappling with the aftermath of the natural disaster said.

"According to the data as of 10:00 p.m., as a result of the emergency, nine people have died, 1,011 more suffered injuries and 143 are waiting for assistance," the statement said.

A total of 963 casualties were reported earlier.

On Wednesday morning, Taiwan was rocked by an earthquake, its strongest in 25 years. The 7.2-magnitude tremors hit Hualien County at 7:58 a.m. local time and were felt across Taiwan. According to seismologists, the epicenter was located at a depth of 15.5 kilometers some 25 kilometers southeast of the city of Hualien on the island’s east coast. The tremors were distinctly felt in China’s eastern provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi. The earthquake was followed by more than 200 aftershocks.
