Russia drops top spot in medals standings of 2014 Winter Olympics after IOC rulings

The International Olympic Committee announced its decision on Friday to strip Russian bobsleigh racer Alexander Zubkov of two Olympic gold medals

MOSCOW, November 24. /TASS/. The Russian national Olympic team lost its first place in the overall medal standings of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi after the country’s bobsleigh racer, Alexander Zubkov, was stripped today of his two gold medals won in Sochi.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced its decision on Friday to strip Russian bobsleigh racer Alexander Zubkov of two Olympic gold medals he won at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi and also ruled to ban the athlete for life.

Zubkov wrapped up with his sports career in 2014 and is currently holding the post of the president of the Russian Bobsleigh Federation.

The IOC also ruled to ban for life Russian speed skaters Olga Fatkulina and Alexander Rumyantsev over doping abuse allegations. Their results from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi have been annulled as well.

The Russian Olympic squad now has a total of 10 Olympic golds from the Winter Olympics in Sochi, which means that Norway is one gold ahead in the top place of the standings.
