Fifteen people killed in clashes at DR Congo's football stadium

Violence broke out after Tout Puissant Mazmebe football team from Lubumashi won 1-0 over the home team AS Vita Club

PRETORIA, May 12. /ITAR-TASS/. At least 15 people have died and more than 20 have been injured in clashes of football fans in the capital of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kinshasa, on Sunday, local Radio Okapi reported citing sources from the Interior Ministry.

Violence broke out after Tout Puissant Mazmebe football team from Lubumashi won 1-0 over the home team AS Vita Club.

At the end of the match, fans started to throw stones at the football field, and the referee had to stop the game several times. A fight broke out between the fans, which led to one of the stadium’s walls crashing. The police had to use the tear gas.

Mazembe is one of the most successful Congolese football teams. They are four-time winners of the African Cup of Champions Clubs. They won the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1980, the CAF Super Cup in 2010 and 2011. Mazembe was a runner-up in FIFA Club World Cup in 2010.
