JFK, Newark airports suspend operations after earthquake — authorities

The earthquake with the magnitude of 4.8 took place on Friday in New Jersey at about 10:23 a.m. local time

NEW YORK, April 5. /TASS/. John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark Liberty international airports have suspended their operations after the earthquake in the State of New Jersey, Governor of the State of New York Kathy Hochul said.

"JFK and Newark airports are in full ground stops to assess any potential for after effects and we're been in contact with utility companies," the Governor said at a briefing streamed by the Fox News.

A JFK spokesperson told TASS earlier that the airport continues functioning normally. CNN television reported, citing sources, that the Newark Airport resumed operations after a short pause caused by the earthquake.

The earthquake with the magnitude of 4.8 took place on Friday in New Jersey at about 10:23 a.m. local time [14:23 UTC]. The source was at the depth of one kilometer, five kilometers away from Lebanon. The borough’s office told TASS that no information about destruction or injured person was received.

The earth tremor was also experienced in many New York boroughs. A meeting of the UN Security Council was interrupted for a while due to the earthquake.

The previous earthquake with the magnitude above 4 occurred near New York in October 1985, according to the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
