Kazakhstan’s coronavirus cases exceed 169,000

NUR-SULTAN, January 18. /TASS/. The number of coronavirus cases in Kazakhstan rose by 1,003 to 169,099 in the past 24 hours, the government’s interagency commission on coronavirus response said on Monday.

According to the commission, the number of coronavirus recoveries has reached 153,503 and the death toll has climbed to 2,408.

On August 1, the Kazakh Health Ministry changed its method for counting coronavirus cases. Apart from confirmed COVID-19 patients, the data now includes patients diagnosed with pneumonia who test negative for the coronavirus but have symptoms similar to COVID-19. As many as 46,831 such cases and 538 deaths were recorded in the country as of January 17.

The production of Russia’s Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine was launched in Kazakhstan in late December. Mass vaccination is expected to begin in February. In addition, the country plans to launch the production of its own coronavirus vaccine, QazCOVID-in, in March.
