MOSCOW, April 24. /TASS/. The commander of Russia’s strategic missile force, Sergey Karakayev, said on Sunday Russia’s new generation intercontinental ballistic missile Sarmat can carry several hypersonic warheads.
"Sarmat is a fundamentally different missile system. Its delivery vehicle is far more powerful than the current one, Avangard. It was created for more than one warhead," Karakayev said on the Rossiya-1 television channel.
No other country has such systems on combat duty yet. "The advent of Avangard has ushered in a new era, an era of hypersonic weapons," he added.
The Sarmat’s developer, CEO and Chief Designer of the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau, Vladimir Degtyar, said the new missile was capable of circling the globe and attacking targets from any direction.
"If the target is in the south, it can attack from the north, and if the target is in the north, it can attack from the south," he said. "The missile Sarmat is the latest achievement in missile engineering surpassing everything that has been created so far. It is one of the best missiles in the world.
"We can and we know how. We will defend our positions," Degtyar said.
