Trade turnover between Japan, Russia up for third consecutive month

Exports from Japan to Russia rose by 52.8%, while imports from Russia to Japan fell by 5%

TOKYO, November 20. /TASS/. Trade turnover between Japan and Russia increased by 6.75% in October 2024 year-on-year to 107.754 bln yen ($696.5 mln at the current exchange rate), according to TASS’ calculations based on data released by the Japanese finance ministry.

Meanwhile exports from Japan to Russia rose by 52.8% to 31.47 bln yen ($203.4 mln), while imports from Russia to Japan fell by 5% to 76.284 bln yen ($493.1 mln). Among the main trade turnover categories are still Japanese cars (accounting for more than 65% of total exports from Japan to Russia) and Russian energy resources (around 70% of total imports from Russia). In September, trade turnover between the two countries increased by 22.78% to 98.6 bln yen ($659 mln).

In October, Japan’s import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia went up by 8.9% year-on-year. Tokyo also cut purchases of Russian coal by 87.3% in the reporting period and it did not purchase oil from Russia.

Japan’s export of passenger cars to Russia grew by 45.8% in October year-on-year. Japan’s export of spare parts and components for transport vehicles also rose by 27% last month.

Japan’s import of grain from Russia plunged by 85.8% in the period year-on-year. Supplies of vegetables from Russia to Japan also decreased - by 25.2%, while seafood deliveries lost 10.4%.
