Israeli army receives orders to urgently prepare for combat operations in Gaza — media

Talks have come to an impasse, according to the Kan radio station

TEL AVIV, March 8. /TASS/. The Israeli political leadership led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the army to urgently prepare for combat operations in the Gaza Strip, the Kan radio station reported.

According to the media outlet, the Palestinian movement Hamas is not interested in implementing a peace plan proposed by US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff, while talks have come to an impasse.

The Ynet news outlet reported on Friday that Israel’s Chief of the General Staff Eyal Zamir had approved a plan of a new offensive in the Palestinian enclave. According to Ynet, the Jewish state expects tensions to escalate as Hamas is regrouping and reinforcing its defenses.

In mid-January, Israel and Hamas reached an agreement to release the hostages held in Gaza and declare a ceasefire in the enclave, which was brokered by Egypt, Qatar and the US. The three-phase deal took effect on January 19. During the initial 42-day phase, which ended on March 1, Hamas released 33 Israeli hostages. On March 2, Israel suspended humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and closed all checkpoints, citing Hamas’s refusal to accept Witkoff’s plan to continue Gaza ceasefire talks.
