CAIRO, January 2. /TASS/. The number of Palestinians killed as a result of the Israeli army's operations in the Gaza Strip since the start of hostilities in October 2023 is approaching 45,600, the enclave’s Health Ministry said on its Telegram channel.

"The number of victims of Israeli actions in Gaza since October 2023 has risen to 45,581; another 108,438 have been injured," the post reads. Gaza’s Health Ministry stressed that in the past 24 hours, 28 Palestinians were killed and 59 wounded in the enclave as a result of Israeli bombardments.

The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated after the infiltration of armed supporters of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, accompanied by the killings of residents in border settlements and the capture of more than 240 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation with the aim of wiping out the Hamas military and political infrastructure and securing the release all those abducted. The hostilities in the Gaza Strip have continued unabated ever since.
