NEW YORK, November 6. /TASS/. Republican Donald Trump, who is leading the presidential election in the United States, and his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, have stressed the importance of unifying the country, Steven Cheung, Trump Campaign Communications Director, said in a statement after their phone call.
"President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke by phone earlier today where she congratulated him on his historic victory. President Trump acknowledged Vice President Harris on her strength, professionalism, and tenacity throughout the campaign, and both leaders agreed on the importance of unifying the country," Cheung noted.
The Washington Post reported earlier in the day that Harris has called Trump to congratulate him on winning the election. The newspaper cited her aide as saying that they also "discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power and being a president for all Americans."
Harris is expected to address her supporter with a concession speech later in the day.
The US held its general election on November 5, with the voting having concluded when it was Wednesday morning in Moscow. Although vote counting continues, Trump has already proclaimed himself the country’s 47th president as he has scored more than 270 electoral votes, which is enough to win the election. Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson has already called him the elected head of state. Meanwhile, numerous congratulations have already been sent to Trump from foreign leaders.
Along with the presidential election, Americans were choosing governors in 11 states and two US territories, a third of the Senate, and all members of the House of Representatives.
