TOKYO, February 12. /TASS/. Japan, which is holding the presidency in the Group of Seven, plans to call a meeting of the member countries’ foreign ministers in Germany for February 18, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported on Sunday.
Germany will host the annual Munich Security Conference from February 17-19, and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, who will be attending, wants to use the opportunity to hold talks of G7 foreign ministers, the report said.
According to the newspaper, the ministers could discuss measures to support Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. In addition, Japan is hoping to reach an agreement for holding a G7 online summit to mark the one-year anniversary of the Russian special operation in Ukraine.
Japan is holding a rotating G7 presidency this year and is scheduled to host the group’s summit in Hiroshima in May. The city suffered from a US nuclear bombing in August 1945. Together with Nagasaki, also hit by a US atomic bomb in August 1945, they are the world’s only places struck with nuclear weapons.
