Police officer murdered in Russia's North Caucasus Nalchik

NALCHIK, July 31. /TASS/. A senior police officer has been murdered in the capital of Russia’s North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. The assassination was organized in the house where the chief of staff of the Interior Ministry department of Cherek District lived. A special plan to search and detain the perpetrators has been put into operation, the press service of the republican Interior Ministry said.

"Today, at approximately 03:30 Moscow Time (00:00 GMT) two unidentified persons broke into a private house of the chief of staff of the Interior Ministry department of Cherek District in the city of Nalchik. The assaulters fired several shots from firearms, which resulted in the death of the police officer," the Interior Ministry said. Criminal proceedings have been initiated.

A week ago, a special operation was held in Nalchik to eliminate an armed gang, which planned the murders of public officers during the celebrations to mark Republic Day in Kabardino-Balkaria on September 1. During the operation six gunmen were wiped out, and a big bomb-making laboratory and a large number of firearms and ammunition were discovered.

"It’s been established that the criminals planned to conduct headline-making acts of sabotage and terrorist attacks, including the murders of public officers during the celebrations dedicated to Republic Day," the Information Center of Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) told TASS back then.

The committee noted that the gunmen had committed a series of terrorist crimes between 2013 and 2015, including murders and attempted assassinations of law enforcement officers.
