Lavrov laces into West’s schemes at undermining international law

The top diplomat noted that the discussions of the meeting are intended to amalgamate the efforts of international lawyers "in the interests of the development of international legal thought and the formation of a fairer multipolar world order architecture"

MOSCOW, November 10. /TASS/. The established system of international law is being tested today, as the West does not give up its attempts to undermine the existing international legal norms to serve its own interests, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in his greeting to the participants in the 65th annual meeting of the Russian Association of International Law.

"Today, the modern system of international law is being tested. In addition to destructive attempts to undermine and revise the existing international legal norms in order to serve its narrow selfish geopolitical interests, the West is actively using illegitimate unilateral sanctions. And in order to provide ideological and political cover for their aggressive steps, the West persistently promotes the neocolonial concept of a ‘rule-based order’. Meanwhile, the application of these ‘rules’ to practice undermines the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, including the sovereign equality of states," the top diplomat said in a statement published on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website on Thursday.

Lavrov noted that the discussions of the meeting are intended to amalgamate the efforts of international lawyers "in the interests of the development of international legal thought and the formation of a fairer multipolar world order architecture."
