DPR ombudsman turns to ICRC, UN on reported torture of Russian POWs in Ukraine

It was reported earlier that on October 17 following negotiations, 110 Russian nationals were returned home from Kiev-controlled territories

NOVOAZOVSK /DPR/, October 21. /TASS/. Russia’s prisoners of war, released earlier by Ukraine, disclosed that they had been subjected to torture while being held captive, the Donetsk People’s Republic’s human rights commissioner, Daria Morozova, stated.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported earlier that on October 17 following negotiations, 110 Russian nationals were returned home from Kiev-controlled territories. The number of freed captives included 72 Russian sailors of civilian vessels, held by Kiev since February 2022.

"We have interviewed all of these guys, both during the previous and the latest [POW] exchanges," Morozova told journalists. "We realized that 100-percent of them were subjected to torture."

"Based on their interviews we appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross [ICRC] as well as the UN Human Rights Committee [OHCHR]," she continued. "And we have notified all the proper authorities, namely the Russian Investigative Committee and the Russian Military Prosecutor’s Office."

POWs exchange

DPR Head Denis Pushilin announced on June 29 that the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Kiev regime had carried out a POW swap, with each side returning 144 soldiers, in the first exchange of captives between the DPR and Ukraine since the beginning of the special military operation. He added that the captured Ukrainian POWs handed over to the Kiev regime included privates of nationalist battalions who were in poor health.

As Russian Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant-General Igor Konashenkov reported on June 30, the prisoner swap was implemented on instruction from Russia’s supreme commander-in-chief.
