Russian Navy frigate resumes deployment after first-ever joint exercise with Seychelles

The key event of the visit was the first joint Russian-Seychelles anti-piracy exercise, the Russian Defense Ministry said

MOSCOW, November 6. /TASS/. The Russian Pacific Fleet’s frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov has continued its long-distance voyage following the first-ever joint Russian-Seychelles anti-piracy naval exercise, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

"The Pacific Fleet frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov has completed its port call in Victoria, Republic of Seychelles, and put to sea. The key event of the visit was the first joint Russian-Seychelles anti-piracy exercise," the ministry said in a statement.

It noted that the Republic of Seychelles was represented in the exercise by the Coast Guard patrol vessel Andromache. The two countries’ ships conducted communications drills and practiced coordinated maneuvers at sea. The main episode of the exercise was an operation to free a vessel that had been "seized" by pirates. According to the exercise scenario, a civilian ship sent a distress signal reporting an attack by a group of armed individuals. Sailors from both countries boarded the vessel and neutralized the simulated attackers.

Following the exercise, the Marshal Shaposhnikov left the territorial waters of the Republic of Seychelles and continued its mission in the Asia-Pacific region, the ministry added.

Voyage of Perekop

The Defense Ministry also reported that on the same day, the Russian Navy’s Baltic Fleet training ship Perekop, which has been on a long-distance training voyage since early July, called at Douala, Republic of Cameroon. After leaving the port, the ship’s crew practiced joint maneuvering with the P-108 patrol boat of the Cameroonian Navy. Following the drills, the two countries’ sailors exchanged farewells, and the training ship Perekop continued its long-distance voyage in the Atlantic Ocean.
