Denmark handed Greenland over to US — Trump

The US leader emphasized that "it's going to go down as the greatest real estate deal in history, probably after Venezuela"

WASHINGTON, October 25. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump believes that the Danish government has agreed to transfer control of Greenland to Washington.

"By the way, Denmark was so great. They gave us Greenland," he told Republican Party supporters at a rally in Georgia ahead of the November 3 midterm congressional elections. "It's going to go down as the greatest real estate deal in history, probably after Venezuela," Trump emphasized, referring to the agreement he signed in September with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen. The agreement involves transferring responsibility for ensuring the security of the Arctic island to Washington.

"We got them both for zero," the US president added, referring to Greenland and Venezuela.

Trump had previously stated that Washington was assuming temporary control of Venezuela. On January 3, the US attacked civilian and military targets in Venezuela, seized President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores and removed them from the country. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who served as executive vice president under Maduro, is currently acting as head of state in Venezuela.

Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous territory. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Greenland Defense Agreement in addition to their NATO alliance commitments. Under this treaty, the US undertook to defend the island from potential aggression.
