Seoul reports incursion of Russian aircraft into its air defense identification zone

The South Korean Defense Ministry called in Russian military attache Nikolay Marchenko to protest the incident

SEOUL, March 20. /TASS/. South Korea’s Defense Ministry said Russian aircraft allegedly entered Seoul’s air defense identification zone (KADIZ) over the Sea of Japan on Thursday, news agency Yonhap reported.

While there was no violation of the Republic of Korea’s airspace, Seoul said it had scrambled its fighter jets which "took preventative measures to avoid any emergency situations."

The South Korean Defense Ministry called in Russian military attache Nikolay Marchenko to protest the incident.

Seoul previously reported a similar event on March 15.

Moscow has repeatedly stated that Seoul had unilaterally established the KADIZ which does not create legal obligations for other countries. The Republic of Korea calls on foreign planes to identify themselves even when there are no airspace violations.
