EU leaders to try to approve association's 800-billion-euro rearmament plan on March 6

BRUSSELS, March 5. /TASS/. The leaders of the 27 EU member states will try to approve the European Commission's plan to spend 800 billion euros on rearmament at an extraordinary summit on March 6, a senior EU official told reporters ahead of the meeting.

"We expect the European Council to enshrine (in the final document - TASS) that these recommendations of the European Commission must be immediately put forward for implementation," he said.

According to the diplomat, it is expected that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will explain to EU leaders the details of this proposal, in particular, regarding the EU countries borrowing 150 billion euros for defense. "In general, all EU countries agree that Europe must act and be more independent in the defense sphere," he added.

The day before, Ursula von der Leyen said she had proposed to EU leaders a plan to rearm the alliance to the tune of 800 billion euros.
