Merz confirmed as chairman of CDU/CSU faction in Bundestag — DPA

BERLIN, February 25. /TASS/. Friedrich Merz, the leader of of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), candidate for chancellor from the conservative bloc of the CDU and the Christian Social Union (CSU), has been overwhelmingly approved for the post of the head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag, the news agency DPA has cited sources in the party as saying.

Merz reportedly received 98% of the votes at the faction’s meeting. A total of 205 votes were cast; 201 legislators voted for Merz and 4 against.

Merz previously held the position of the chairman of the united CDU/CSU faction during the last legislative period from 2000 to 2002.

On February 23, Germany held early Bundestag elections. According to preliminary official returns, the CDU/CSU bloc emerged victorious, securing 28.6% of the votes. For the first time in its history, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party placed second, nearly doubling its share in contrast to the 2021 elections, with 20.8%. The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), led by current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, came in third, garnering support from approximately 16.4% of the voters - about a third less than in 2021. The Greens and the Left Party, received around 11.6% and 8.8% of the votes, respectively.
