TBILISI, February 6. /TASS/. Georgia's non-governmental organizations (NGOs), predominantly funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), continue to play a role in destabilizing the country, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters.
"Georgia has the wealthiest NGOs, which were directly involved in a revolution in Georgia. This process is ongoing to this day," Kobakhidze noted.
The prime minister cited the activities of the Georgian NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy as an example. Back in 2020, this USAID-funded organization allegedly manipulated the results of the parallel vote counting in the country's parliamentary elections to trigger unrest in society, Kobakhidze said.
"You see how the situation is unfolding. Foreign-funded NGOs are at the forefront of revolutionary efforts. These are organizations financed by USAID and the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). Even the new US administration has become openly critical of their activities," he stressed.
In this context, Kobakhidze touched upon the initiative of the ruling Georgian Dream - Democratic Georgia political party to develop and adopt a new law on foreign agents, which will be modeled after the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). No one can mislead the Georgian people — the influx of every last cent into the country should be transparent to Georgian society, the prime minister stressed.
Earlier, the US administration halted the activities of USAID at the suggestion of US billionaire Elon Musk, recently appointed as head of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory panel focused on enhancing governmental operations and fighting bureaucracy. US President Donald Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as USAID's interim head.
