Death toll from earthquake rises to 3,419 in Turkey — officials

Injuries were sustained by 20,534 people

ANKARA, February 6. /TASS/. The death toll from an earthquake in southeastern Turkey has climbed to more than 3,400, and more than 20,500 people have been injured, the country’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Tuesday in televised remarks.

"As of now, the death toll across the country’s 10 provinces is 3,419. Injuries were sustained by 20,534 people. The number of toppled buildings is 5,775," he said.

Oktay said 3,200 specialists from other countries are helping with the search and rescue operation in affected areas.

"Rescuers from 14 countries are helping us. They include the Czech Republic, France, Malta, Poland, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Germany, Serbia, Slovakia, Qatar, the UK, the Russian Federation," he said. A total of more than 12,000 Turkish rescuers are working together with the foreign specialists to clean up the rubble.
