Russian Emergencies Ministry plane with rescuers arrives in earthquake-stricken Syria

The plane carries 50 people and the equipment necessary for searching and rescuing people from under the debris

LATAKIA, February 7. /TASS/. A Russian Emergencies Ministry IL-76 aircraft with rescuers, cynologists and special equipment arrived on Tuesday in Syria, which was affected by the earthquake in Turkey the day before.

According to a TASS correspondent, the plane carries 50 people and the equipment necessary for searching and rescuing people from under the debris.

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Kahramanmaras province in southeastern Turkey on Monday night. The tremors, followed by nearly 150 aftershocks, were felt in ten provinces as well as in neighboring countries, including Syria, where major destruction and casualties were also recorded. The number of victims in Turkey, according to the latest data from the local authorities, increased to 3,381, more than 20,000 people were injured.

At the same time, according to the Syrian Health Ministry, the death toll in Syria grew to 769, with at least 1,448 more injured in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, Tartus, Hama and Idlib, located in the west and north-west of the country.
