Azerbaijan’s Aliyev proposes enlarging UNSC with Islamic, non-aligned states

He recalled, nearly 78 years have passed after World War Two, the world has changed and keeps changing

BAKU, January 28. /TASS/. The United Nations Security Council should be enlarged with member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and non-aligned states, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Saturday after his talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

"The UN-related issues have been negotiated around the world for many years, and opinions are being exchanged about reforms in the organization," Aliyev said in a statement quoted by his press office.

"I believe that the Security Council should be expanded. A permanent seat should be granted to a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the OIC should nominate this candidate through consultations. Another permanent seat should be given to the Non-Aligned Movement and the nation that holds the chairmanship of the movement should have this seat," he said.

As Azerbaijan’s president recalled, nearly 78 years have passed after World War Two, the world has changed and keeps changing.

"I believe that these reforms will serve to create a fairer and safer world," Aliyev stressed.

The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States) and ten non-permanent members elected for by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms. Five of them - India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway - vacated their seats on December 31, 2022. Malta, Mozambique, Switzerland, Ecuador and Japan replaced them. Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the United Arab Emirates will also remain members of the UN Security Council until the end of 2023.
