MADRID, January 20. /TASS/. The European Union is not and does not want to become a party to the Ukrainian conflict, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said receiving an award from the New Economy forum in Madrid on Friday.

"The EU is not participating in the conflict in Ukraine," he said. "We are not [one of the] warring sides, we don’t want to be it." That said, the top diplomat added that EU countries are helping Kiev militarily.

Borrell admitted that the conflict in Ukraine began back in 2014. According to him, "up until the very last moment, Europe was trying to avoid a war." The official again repeated the necessity to provide military aid to Kiev.
