Abkhazia, Syria state their support for Russia, sovereignty of Donbass republics

SUKHUM, August 25. /TASS/. Abkhazia and Syria support Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine and the sovereignty of the Donbass republics, Abkhaz Foreign Minister Inal Ardzinba told reporters on Thursday.

He made the statement following talks with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad.

"We adopted a statement in which we emphasized our joint positions in relation to the international situation and from the perspective of our bilateral cooperation. Our countries support the Russian Federation, the conduct of the special military operation on the territory of Ukraine. We believe that it has global importance and will contribute to the formation of a more just world order, where peoples are not infringed upon, but have the right to determine their future and develop as they want, where the rights of peoples, national culture, identity, historical destiny of each people are respected," Ardzinba stressed.

He also said Abkhazia and Syria "the support state sovereignty and international legal identity of the Donbass republics, and back the free expression of the will of other regions of Ukraine, which have already declared that they want to freely and independently determine their destiny."

"We strongly condemn any manifestations of international terrorism, and fully support the Syrian people and state in their desire to overcome this evil. We support such a struggle anywhere in the world, wherever it happens. All illegal armed combat units and formations must be withdrawn from the territory of Syria as soon as possible," the Abkhaz minister said.

The foreign ministers of Abkhazia and Syria held talks in Sukhum on Thursday. They signed a memorandum of understanding on political consultations.

Syria recognized Abkhazia’s independence on May 29, 2018 and established diplomatic relations with it.
