Russia to decide in mid-May on seat swap flights to International Space Station

According to Rogozin, various opinions are currently on the table concerning the issue of swap flights to the ISS

MOSCOW, April 29. /TASS/. Russia’s State Space Corporation Roscosmos is waiting to receive a corresponding response from the government in the middle of the next month regarding seat swap flights to the International Space Station (ISS), Head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin said in an interview with TASS on Friday.

"We anticipate government’s decision in mid-May on the issue of the swap flights," Rogozin stated. "Federal executive bodies are currently in work to come up with their [expert] opinion."

According to Rogozin, various opinions are currently on the table concerning the issue of swap flights to the ISS.

"This is why we need to convene a meeting of a consensus panel, which will decide whether we need to launch swap flights [to the ISS] or we do not," Rogozin noted. "The dates [for swap flights] need to be defined as well if we opt for them."

Last year, the Roscosmos chief told reporters that cosmonaut Anna Kikina might be the first to fly aboard a US Crew Dragon spacecraft under the program of seat swap flights in 2022. For her part, Kikina said that she was pleasantly surprised by this decision. Rogozin specified in an interview with The New York Times that Roscosmos planned to conduct a seat swap flight a year jointly with NASA in 2022-2024.

The Roscosmos chief said earlier this year that the United States should not ruin space cooperation with Russia as this might lead to the premature curtailing of joint work on the ISS and other dramatic consequences.
